London Philharmonic Orchestra; Harbach (1946-)
Description:
This is the seventh collection of works by Harbach, an American composer on whom the MSR label is focusing its efforts. Harbach is also active as an organist and harpsichordist (she has recorded Soler's complete harpsichord sonatas, 120 pieces in all, item no. MS1300). Her music, written in clear tonalities and clear forms, is closer to neo-romanticism or neo-classicism than to contemporary music, and her style is familiar to the likes of Copland and Morton Gould. The music of "Chasing the Sacred Sun" was inspired by Native American mythology, while "Spiritualis" was inspired by Negro spirituals. The simple and heartwarming melodies of both songs are appealing. Tobu Shoji Co.
